Trail running tour

Ardnamurchan Volcanoes and Vikings – 9km – 2 hours including photo stops

Every Sunday morning throughout the summer and Saturday 24th August - meet at 11am

Would you like to run through the heart of an extinct volcano and in the footsteps of vikings and crofters?
Would you like to stay relaxed and avoid path finding and map reading?
We would love to lead you on a dramatic running journey at a sociable running pace.

We meet in either in Kilchoan village or Glendrian(car park) tbc.

Our path from the car park at Glendrian brings us into the famous volcanic ring dyke and caldera.  The dramatic hills surround us as we run to the centre of the ring and the deserted village of Glendrian, an abandoned crofting township. Standing there we can easily imagine the generations that worked the land, and the seas, to feed themselves. The buildings are varied in date and style and contain evidence for the complex history of settlement on the site.

From there we head towards the coast to Port Eigin Aig, a natural rocky harbour. The beautiful shingle beach, with its green, grey and purpled hued stones, fills the mind and the imagination and feels far from today's hectic world.
It's said that the vikings landed here, as it's not far from the famous viking tomb further along the coast in Swordle. The Irish missionary saint St. Brendan is believed to have sheltered here during one of his voyages. Cattle from the islands were landed here by the cattle drovers.

We take a short rest and enjoy the magical views to Skye, Eigg, Muck and Rhum . We return by the same path.

The route is a mixture of tracks, bogs and rocky paths. Trail running shoes are recommended and a bag to carry snacks, water and extra clothing.

This is a led run and we will be moving at an easy pace which suits everyone in the group. No previous trail running experience is necessary but we recommend that you are comfortable running 10km on the pavement. Pace is unimportant. Maximum group size: 5

We love running because we can explore places which are inaccessible by road, we's love to share these special places with you. The Volcanoes and Vikings tour takes you places that you might never discover alone.
